Current Status of Offshore Wind Power and Development Direction in Vietnam

Offshore wind power - a new generation of green energy – has a history of development over the past 30 years in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, and the United States. After the Cop 26 Summit Conference in 2020 (in the UK), the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) has been formed. The offshore wind power development is rapidly increasing in the world, currently standing at 57 GW and impossibly reaching 500 GW by 2040 and 1,000 GW by 2050. Vietnam has an economic and technical potential for offshore wind power which is over 600 GW and attracts many investors. To develop sustainably of the offshore wind power industry, it is essential to executive on research and establish a legal framework to promote offshore wind power development (laws, national offshore wind power strategies, and related policy documents, etc).

On June 25, 2019, in Hanoi, took place a ceremony for signing the US$ 200 million credit contract between Vietnam Foreign Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Vietcombank) and Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to finance the renewable energy projects (green energy and environmental protection).
