HANOI, 27 July 2026 – Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and the Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) have agreed to strengthen cooperation in research, technical exchanges, and the development of a roadmap for battery energy storage systems (BESS), to gradually master the technology to support power system development and enhance national energy security.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are expected to become a cornerstone of Viet Nam's energy transition. As renewable energy capacity expands rapidly, energy storage will play an increasingly critical role in ensuring grid reliability, integrating variable renewable energy sources, and supporting the country's long-term decarbonization goals. This article presents the Vietnam Energy Association's (VEA) assessment of Viet Nam's emerging BESS market. It examines three key aspects: market growth prospects, policy and investment challenges, and strategic opportunities for domestic enterprises.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) is drafting a Circular that sets out the pricing mechanism for electricity generation services provided by Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), as well as the key terms of power purchase agreements applicable to this new type of facility.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Growth Markets Fund II (CI GMF II), has taken the final investment decision (FID) on Project Arena, a 220 MW / 1,100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile. The project will be one of Chile's first large-scale standalone BESS projects to reach commercial operations. On-site construction will commence in Q1.2025, with the expectation of delivering power as soon as Q1.2026.
