As well known, by the end of 2020, in Vietnam, there were put into operation power generation projects with a total installed capacity of 69,300 MW, of which the renewable energy capacity was 21,000 MW including 3,600 MW small hydro, 300 MW biomass power, more than 600 MW wind power, 16,500 MW solar power (7,900 MW ground projects and 8,600 MW rooftop ones) accounted for 30.6% of the total capacity of the whole national system, in particular, the solar power (ground and rooftop projects) reached 23.9%.

The Decision No13/2020 / QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on mechanisms to encourage developing solar power in Vietnam (Decision 13 for short), effective from May 22, 2020 (replacing Decision 11/2017 / QD-TTg expired on June 30, 2019) made motive power for many businesses and households to complete installing the solar power systems previously connected to the national power system.

German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) have signed a cooperation agreement with public and private partners to implement a new project on combining aquaculture and solar power in the Mekong Delta region.

On August 15, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung received Mr. Raymond Carlsen, General Director of Scatec Solar Company (Norway). Scatec Solar proposed an investment in the Tri An floating solar power plant project, with a capacity of 1,000 MW.

More businesses and households in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho are installing solar panels to reduce monthly electricity costs.

According to Mr. Vo Quang Lam - Deputy General Director of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN): As of May 30, 2019, there 47 solar power projects, with a capacity of 2,300 MW have been connected to the national power system, and it is expected that in June, there 49 projects with a capacity of about 2,600 MW will be connected.

According to the Binh Thuan provincial People's Committee (PPC), Binh Thuan province has 113 potential areas/projects for solar power with a total capacity of 11,648 MWp on an area of 14,198 ha, among which, there are 90 projects with a total capacity of 5,341.06 MWp on an area of 6,720.48 hectares and a total registered investment capital of137,208.85 billion VND, considered and approved by Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) in the project "Solar Power Development Planning in Binh Thuan province up to 2020 with a vision to 2030".

Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has officially issued the Circular No16/2017/TT-BCT on grid connected and rooftop solar power development in which regulates the National Solar Power Development Planning (NSPDP) to be made once only. The following updates, additions and corrections for NSPDP are made when adjusting the National Power Development Planning (NPDP). Making, approving and announcing the NSPP are stipulated in the Prime Minister Decision No11/2017/QĐ-TTg on the mechanisms to stimulate developing solar power projects in Vietnam.

On Sept.12, 2017, Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) officially issued the Circular on regulation for the development planning and pattern power purchase agreement (PPA) for solar power projects.

Investors have shown interest in solar energy sector in the central coast province of Khanh Hoa, with about 10 solar projects applying for investment licenses in the province.
