Answering questions from international investors at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2022 (BETD 2022): What priorities should Vietnam identify to pave the way for more efficient coastal energy in the near future? What are the key levers that can unlock the full potential of coastal renewables (such as offshore wind, wave, or tidal power)? Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An said: In order to effectively exploit this potential offshore wind energy source, we are trying to perfect the legal bases and preparing favorable conditions for developing the projects.

The conference on the operation and production of coal-fired power plants in the Northern region has just been held by Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) on the afternoon of June 19, 2023. There were 24 investors of coal-fired power plants in the Northern region in attendance, including the Power Generation Corporations 1, 2, 3 (EVN member units), Vinacomin Power Corporation, PetroVietnam Power Corporation, BOT investors and the investors of the independent power plants.

Recently, wind power projects in Quang Tri province were pushed up a schedule in difficult conditions on the Covid-19 pandemic, racing to preferential FIT prices. Currently, in Quang Tri province, there are 17 wind power projects with a total capacity of 1,242.4 MW, total investment capital of more than VND 43,442 billion, supplemented to the planning and approved by the Provincial People's Committee.

Recently, a consortium of 3 investors, Siemens Energy, KG Electric Power Corporation and Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 2 (PECC 2), has just sent a document to the Ha Tinh Provincial People's Committee to submit a Pre-Feasibility Study Report and an investment proposal for Vung Ang 3 LNG Power Center in Vung Ang Economic Zone, Ky Anh town, Ha Tinh province.

Information from the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) said: On the morning of June 28, in Hanoi, under the witness of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and General Secretary, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan attended the ceremony to exchange power purchase agreement (PPA) between EVN and hydropower investors in Laos.

The central province of Quang Tri has been luring strategic investors who have potential in capital and technology to involve in large-scale wind power projects.

Speaking at the working meeting with Chinese Sungrow Power group, Mr. Luong Van Hai, Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee (PPC) said, this province always “opens the door” for capable and financially viable partners to invest in wind and solar power projects in the province.

Investors have shown interest in solar energy sector in the central coast province of Khanh Hoa, with about 10 solar projects applying for investment licenses in the province.

In the first week of October 2019, many international investors paid special attention to shares of Nhon Trach 2 Petroleum Power Joint Stock Company (NT2). Specifically, the Panah Fund with a Headquarter in the Cayman Islands currently holding 1.9% of NT2 stock met and had a dialogue with NT2. Following, the Japanese Great Wall Company also came to learn information about production and business activities of NT2 in recent years.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has just issued a document proposing the investors of coal-fired power plants develop a fuel conversion plan. Specifically, converting coal fuel to biomass fuel and ammonia when the power plant has operated for 20 years. And proposing to develop a plan to stop operation when the plant has operated for coal power plants that cannot convert fuel, or do not capture CO2 when the plants have operated for 40 years.
