Publishing the nationwide LNG storage planning

 - General Department of Energy – GDE (MOIT) has organized a conference to announce "Liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage location planning in Vietnam to 2020 and a vision to 2030".

In order to execute government policy on LNG import for diversifying primary energy sources for power generation contributing to guarantee the future energy security of the country, a project on the LNG storage location planning to 2020 and vision to 2030 has been established and approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) at the Decision No 3029/QĐ-BCT dated 30/3/2015. Establishing the planning project based the following main principles: 

1.To accord with the State’ general policy on diversifying fuel sources (coal, oil, gas, hydropower, nuclear power, renewable energy ...) for power generation with an aim of ensuring national energy security.

2.To effectively and sustainably develop power sector for satisfying the goal of mitigating environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emission.

3.To compensate a deficient gas part caused by decreasing tend of domestic gas output.

4.To stimulate market development for domestic industrial customers to use high technologies with the clean fuel.

On the basis of analyzing the factors on geographical positions, and natural, environmental, technical and economical conditions, the following locations have been selected for LNG storage: Cat Hai (Hai Phong city) in the North; My Giang (Khanh Hoa province) in the Center; Son My (Binh Thuan province), Thi Vai (Ba Ria - Vung Tau province) and Hon Khoai (Ca Mau province) in the South.

According to GDE Deputy General Director Nguyen Luong Son, the approved planning has showed the concerns and close guidance of MoIT leadership for the infrastructure  development of the gas industry, suitable with the Gas Industry development strategy of Vietnam in order to provide stable gas sources for socio-economic development and ensuring energy security of the country.

GDE leaders also suggested the economic groups, state - owned corporations and enterprises operating in oil – gas sector to implement the development plans fitting with the approved planning and at the same time, propose the necessary measures for the competent authority to decide in order to effectively carry out the planning.
