At the present, the domestic demand for coal and minerals is increasing, while the productive ability of coal mines has reached its limit, the mining conditions are increasingly difficult due to coal lays placing more and more deeply. This context makes imported coal constantly increase over the years.
Due to the development of the economy, the domestic demand for coal, especially coal for power generation, has expected to increase about 4-5 million tons compared to 2019 production plan of Vinacomin.
In order to guarantee sufficient coal supply for the customers under the signed contracts, it is expected, that Vinacomin will import about 5 million tons of coal in 2019.
The imported coal is mixed with domestic coal in Quang Ninh province for making the coal suitable with the demand of the domestic coal-fired thermal power plants (TPPs). For example, the coal imported amount of 1.8 million tons was mixed with Quang Ninh coal to get 2.2 million tons of 5a.1, 6a.1 coal dusts for TPPs.
At the same time, the import and mixing of coal also helps subsidiaries of Vinacomin to improve their experience and create the new and long-term directions in coal production and business.
According to the plan, in the second quarter of 2019, Vinacomin will sign contracts to import 1.2-1.3 million tons of coal, mainly from Australia, Russia and South Africa. The remaining amount of 2.2-2.5 million tons will be imported in the last 6 months of 2019 depending on the actual needs of the market.
