Vinh Tan 1 TPP Releases Sustainability Report, Promoting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Practices

On September 28, 2026, in Hanoi, Vinh Tan 1 Power Company Limited hosted a series of events, including the workshop “Carbon Emissions Management in Coal-fired Thermal Power: Solutions and International Experience,” the 2026 Suppliers Conference, and the “Vinh Tan Light -Lighting the Way to Prosperity” event, which featured the launch of the company’s 2025 Sustainability Report and a Green Growth Networking session.

The company’s 2025 Sustainability Report, launched at the event, outlines its progress in implementing environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments. It also marks an important step toward greater transparency and accountability to stakeholders.

The Vinh Tan 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant has a total installed capacity of 1,240 MW, comprising two generating units, with total investment capital of US$1.755 billion. Developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the project has an operating term of 25 years before being transferred to the Vietnamese side.

The plant is the first in Vietnam to use supercritical technology to fire domestically sourced anthracite coal. It is also equipped with comprehensive environmental protection systems, including SO₂ desulfurization, NOx reduction, electrostatic precipitators and advanced wastewater treatment systems.

The Sustainability Report was launched as the plant reached a milestone of 3,000 days of safe and stable operation. As of September 21, 2026, cumulative electricity generation had exceeded 62.7 billion kWh, averaging around 8 billion kWh per year, while average annual tax payments to the State budget stood at approximately VND768.8 billion.

According to Vinh Tan 1 Power Company Limited, these results reflect its continued focus on operational discipline, safety, and close coordination among employees, partners and other stakeholders.

Alongside its power generation activities, the company highlighted several environmental and social achievements. Dust removal efficiency has reached 99.9%, while no industrial wastewater is discharged into receiving water bodies. The company also maintains a coral garden covering more than 2,000 square meters.

Vietnamese employees account for 78% of the workforce. The company has created more than 600 long-term jobs and implemented 23 community development projects.

Corporate governance has also strengthened, with 497 control measures in place and a range of international certifications. The company has also increased its procurement of goods and services from local suppliers, contributing to stronger links with domestic businesses.

Speaking to Vietnam Energy Review about ash and slag management, Phan Ngoc Cam Thanh, Deputy General Director of Vinh Tan 1 Power Company Limited, said that in 2025, the plant not only sold all newly generated ash and slag but also transferred 260,000 tonnes of ash and slag from its existing disposal area.

This has enabled the plant to discontinue plans to expand the ash disposal area under the original design. However, before the ash and slag can be reused, the plant must complete the required procedures and testing to demonstrate that the material meets relevant physical, mechanical and environmental safety requirements.

The company said it is not only meeting current environmental requirements but is also proactively preparing for new environmental regulations and standards that will take effect in 2032.

According to the company, most of the plant’s air emission parameters are already on track to meet the requirements applicable from 2032. Total particulate emissions are expected to comply with requirements beyond 2032. For SO₂ and NOx, the company said it is already approaching the 2032 limits and is preparing the necessary measures and equipment to achieve compliance ahead of schedule.

Speaking at the launch of the company’s first-ever 2025 Sustainability Report, Bui Quoc Hung, Deputy Director General of the Electricity Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, described the event as significant, highlighting the company’s efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and sustainable business practices.

According to Mr. Bui Quoc Hung, the publication of the report is also a positive signal that companies in Vietnam’s power sector are paying increasing attention to environmental, social and governance requirements as they pursue sustainable development.
