Vũng Áng II BOT Thermal Power Plant: A National Energy Highlight
The Vũng Áng II BOT Thermal Power Plant, situated in the Vũng Áng Economic Zone, Kỳ Anh Town, Hà Tĩnh Province, stands as one of Vietnam's largest thermal power projects. The plant boasts a total designed capacity of 2x600 MW, utilizing state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical (USC) boiler technology to optimize operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
Implemented under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, the project features investment from three global leading corporations:
-
Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan) – 40% ownership
-
KEPCO (Korea) – 40% ownership
-
Chugoku Electric Power (Japan) – 20% ownership
The plant is scheduled for commercial operation in 2025, contributing significantly to national energy security, enhancing grid stability, and meeting the growing demand for electricity.
The operation and maintenance contract for the plant’s Coal Handling System (CHS) was signed between VAPCO and the EMTEK-KEPS-OES consortium, comprising:
-
EMTEK Power Technology Joint Stock Company (EMTEK)
-
Korea Engineering & Power Service Co., Ltd (KEPS)
-
Optimal Energy Service Co., Ltd (OES)
The scope of the contract encompasses comprehensive operation and maintenance services for the CHS, ensuring stable, safe, and sustainable performance of the plant.
Asia Networks PEMS (PEMS), a member of the EMTEK consortium, will take on key responsibilities in executing and managing the operation and maintenance contract.
This marks PEMS’s first project in providing operation and maintenance services, signifying a major step forward in its strategy to expand into this domain. Beyond operation, PEMS will deliver advanced technical support and innovative solutions to ensure the highest levels of efficiency and reliability for the plant.
Founded in 2018, PEMS has established itself as a leading provider of equipment, spare parts, and technical solutions for Vietnam’s thermal power, petrochemical, and oil & gas industries. The company also serves as the exclusive representative of Doosan Enerbility, supplying equipment and services for thermal power plants utilizing Doosan technology in Vietnam.
Strategic Significance of the Project
The Vũng Áng II BOT Thermal Power Plant represents not only a symbol of international cooperation but also a strategic milestone for Vietnam’s energy sector. The adoption of ultra-supercritical technology will reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing power generation efficiency, aligning with the country’s sustainable development goals.
The signing ceremony marks the beginning of the plant’s operational phase, underscoring the long-term commitment of all parties to the project’s success and sustainability.
Towards a Sustainable Future
Amid increasing energy demand and growing environmental challenges in the power industry, the Vũng Áng II BOT Thermal Power Plant exemplifies technological advancement and operational efficiency.
With the involvement of the EMTEK-KEPS-OES consortium, particularly the pioneering role of PEMS, the project is expected to drive economic development in central Vietnam and contribute to the modernization and sustainability of the nation’s energy sector.
