Sci-tech solutions help PVN develop

 - Scientific and technological (sci-tech) development is one of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN)’s key solutions to improve business efficiency and move to sustainable development.

PVN has established a sci-tech fund for investment in sci-tech infrastructure including laboratory equipment and dedicated hardware and software in all petroleum research institutions to ensure sectoral efficient scientific research and business management. Thanks to the investment, many large scale scientific research projects have been implemented in a number of areas such as exploration and exploitation of oil and gas.

The scientific complex on prospecting, discovering and effectively exploiting oil reservoirs in the pre-tertiary granitoid basement of the Cuu Long basin is considered a great change in global oil and gas detection perspective because the granitoid basement location was previously considered to contain no oil. The discovery of a large oil field on such a basement has helped Vietnam exploit hundreds of millions of tonnes of oil and earn tens of billions of US dollars. This complex also helped PVN win the Ho Chi Minh Prize and State Prize on Science and Technology in 2012.

At present, PVN is focusing on establishing a center for analyzing and testing petroleum strong enough to meet the needs of oil and gas operations in Ho Chi Minh City, thereby terminating the need to send samples abroad for analysis.

Petroleum engineering technology is now an important segment with revenues accounting for more than 25 percent of total sectoral revenue. A series of new technology in this field has been applied through sci-tech projects supported by the state such as the research, design and manufacture of 90m jack-up drilling rig which was considered as one of the major achievements of the oil industry and ranked Vietnam among one of the few countries in the world successfully fabricating this high-tech product.

In recent years, PVN has strengthened international sci-tech cooperation with many foreign organizations, partners, oil companies, research institutes and universities in many countries including Russia, France, US, Denmark, Norway, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and China. Specifically, PVN has signed an agreement with the Japan-based JOGMEC to collaborate on increasing recovery factor in oil extraction by CO2 injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method; an agreement with the Russia-based Gazprom on cooperation in the field of prospecting, discovering and exploiting oil and gas and manufacture of tankers and oil rigs. PVN is also an active member of many bilateral and multilateral international organizations such as the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) and ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE). Through these international partnerships, PVN has acquired new advanced technologies and many related sci-tech training programs.

Seeing that sci-tech development is a key driving force for sustainable development, PVN decided to increase investment in sci-tech infrastructure in the future, especially for scientific and technological development research units. In addition, it will focus on implementing sci-tech innovative solutions.
