Anniversary of Friendship

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Le Dinh Tien, Deputy CEO for Research and Development of ROSATOM Vyacheslav Pershukov, Chairman of the International Union of Nuclear Power and Industry Veterans Vladimir Ognev etc.

The function guests were workers and veterans of the Vietnamese nuclear industry and Russian scientists, who took part in restoring the research reactor in Dalat in the 80s of the XX century. 

Awards from ROSATOM

The function key event was the award ceremony where the Vietnamese scientists and workers were given ROSATOM’s awards for a substantial contribution to modernization and development of the research reactor in Dalat. Vyacheslav Pershukov ladled out honors to a number of Vietnamese distinguished nuclear workers. Besides, the entire team of the Dalat Nuclear Research Institute was awarded an honorary diploma of ROSATOM for the work done to commission the nuclear research reactor in 1982-1984.

“Being one of the first countries in the region, which started developing nuclear power, Vietnam has made great achievements in this field and come close to construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant, and, in the first place, this is the credit of the Dalat research center and its team,” Pershukov said.

Le Dinh Tien also highlighted the invaluable assistance provided by scientists of the former Soviet Union to refurbish and outfit with high technologies the research reactor in Dalat. On behalf of the Ministry of Science and Technology he gave 13 awards to Russian scientists who greatly contributed to restoration of the research reactor in Dalat.

The cooperation continues

Today Russia and Vietnam discuss a prospect of building a new research reactor and new science and technology center in Vietnam. The new 15-megawatt reactor will not only raise the level of education of future specialists and run basic research but also will be of a great applied significance in the areas, such as chemistry and medicine.

Speaking on the importance this project has for building Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant Ninh Thuan, Vyacheslav Pershukov stated: “The Center’s outmost task is to educate the personnel in nuclear science and power engineering. The Center is required for Vietnam to become not just a country where other states build nuclear power plants but the country, which specialists are able to independently operate these plants.” 

In October 2010 Russia and Vietnam signed the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam concerning the cooperation in construction of the two-reactor nuclear power plant in the territory of Vietnam. According to the schedule agreed upon by ROSATOM and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam in February 2013, Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant Ninh Thuan will be commissioned 2023-2024.

To strengthen the cooperation between Russia and Vietnam in building up the national nuclear power, the intergovernmental agreement on the cooperation in building the Nuclear Science and Technology Center in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was signed in Hanoi on November 21, 2011.
