Strengthening Energy Cooperation under the JETP Framework
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of General Secretary Tô Lâm and high-ranking Vietnamese delegates. Mr. Đặng Hoàng An, Chairman of the Members’ Council of EVN, and the representative of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office exchanged the signed MoU.
Under the cooperation framework to implement the Political Declaration on Establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in Vietnam, EVN and the UK FCDO agreed to strengthen collaboration in the following key areas:
-
Leveraging the UK’s experience and enhancing EVN’s role within Vietnam’s power system.
-
Accelerating the development of power grid infrastructure to enable clean electricity transmission, including high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems.
-
Supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants.
-
Enhancing domestic capacity in the development of offshore wind power.
Before this signing, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) also signed an MoU with the UK FCDO, affirming both sides’ commitment to promoting green and sustainable energy transition.
Advancing the Vietnam–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
General Secretary Tô Lâm’s official visit to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland was a great success, as the two countries agreed to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership — the highest level of cooperation framework in Vietnam’s foreign relations system.
Accordingly, Vietnam and the UK identified six key pillars of cooperation, consistent with the new level of their bilateral ties:
-
Political, diplomatic, defense and security cooperation.
-
Economic, trade, investment and financial cooperation.
-
Science, technology, innovation, digital transformation and healthcare.
-
Environment, energy and green transition.
-
Education, culture, sports, tourism, people-to-people exchanges and equality.
-
Coordination on regional and international issues./
