Establishing Biomass Power Development planning for Soc Trang province

 - According to information from Department of Industry and Trade (DOIT) of Soc Trang province, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) had a working meeting with Soc Trang provincial Administration on Biomass Power Development planning for Soc Trang province.

Mr. Vo Khac Chieu, Director of Soc Trang DOIT told that the biomass energy potential of the province includes three key sources as bagasse (sugar-cane refuse), rice husks and straw and energy wood.

The concrete capability of each biomass energy source  is as follows:

-Bagasee: In 2016 Soc Trang Sugar Fabric pressed about 435,000 ton of sugar canes with 130,000 ton of bagasse. At present, Soc Trang has a bagasse fired cogeneration power plant capacity of 12 MW (under Soc Trang Sugar-Cane Joint Stock Company Ltd.). The bagasse production of Sugar Fabric can fully meet the fuel demand of the power plant.

-Rice husks and straw: In 2016, rice production of Soc Trang was 2.4 million ton that gives about 312 thousand ton of rice husks.

At present Soc Trang province has a cultivated area (rice field) of 140 thousand ha which gives about 280 thousand ton of straw per crop (2.0 ton/ha).  Based on rice husks and straw production, it is expected to develop the rice-husks fired power plants of 20 MW in Nga Nam town and 10 MW in Soc Trang city, and straw fired power plants of 5-10 MW in Long Phu, My Tu, Tran De districts and Nga Nam town.

-Forest resource: Soc Trang há nearly 11.360 thousand ha of the salt-marsh forest including indigo, mangrove, nipa…distributed evenly in Long Phu, My Tu, Cu Lao Dung districts and Vinh Chau town.

Based on the planning of afforestation and forestry development, the potential of energy wood of Soc Trang to 2020 is expected as 9,436 ton from natural forests, 8,150 ton from planted forests,  3,786 ton from scattered trees, 17,000 ton from perennial industrial trees and 33,000 ton of the waste wood.

At the working meeting, Soc Trang administration asked MOIT and GGGI to assist the province to make the Biomass Power Development Planning in integration with the Solid Waste Power (Waste to Energy) Development.

MOIT and GGGI Missions introduced the activities for technical support, legal framework, methodology of data collection and plan to establish the Biomass Power Development Planning for Soc Trang province.
