Vietnam – Lao cooperation on hydropower development and power exchange

 - On February 18, 2019, in Hanoi, at the working meeting with Mr. Trinh Dinh Dung, Vice Prime Minister of Vietnamese government, Mr. Khammany Inthirath, Minister of Energy and Mining of Laos informed that he discussed with MOIT, EVN and PVN about cooperation on developing hydropower projects in Laos, power interconnection and power purchase between the two countries.

At the working meeting Mr. Trinh Dinh Dung emphasized that Vietnam – Lao relationship is an exemplary solidarity, friendship and brotherhood. The cooperation on economy, trade, investment is one of the backbones to promote the strength of both countries.

Vice Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung considered the cooperation in energy sector to play a key role that not only brings economic benefits, but also has an important signification on politics and security, and also expresses the shares and supports of each other between the two brother countries.

The Vice Prime Minister highly appreciated that the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and the Ministry of Energy and Mining of Laos are actively negotiating the contents of the Agreement between the two governments on cooperation in developing  hydropower, renewable energy and mining projects for leaders of the two countries to approve and sign as soon as possible.

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung also noted, Vietnam is determined not to support developing the energy projects affecting the environment. Along with that, the two countries should soon build a mechanism to ensure strict control of construction investment, quality and safety of lakes, irrigation dams, hydropower projects in the border areas, on the flows to the downstream in Vietnam.

The Minister of Energy and Mining of Laos confirmed that, at present, the two sides have agreed on the contents of joint cooperation and of some large projects for reporting and asking direction from the leaders of the high level in both countries to sign as soon as possible for specific implementation.

The Minister of Energy and Mining of Laos also promised to create favorable conditions for the businesses, especially businesses in the energy and mining sectors of the two countries to more closely and  effectively cooperate in the coming time.
