TKV works with the EU on cooperation in bauxite and rare earths

 - At a meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Holding Corporation (TKV) held talks with the European Union Delegation to Vietnam, led by Ambassador Julien Guerrier, opening up prospects for deeper cooperation in strategic minerals, particularly bauxite and rare earths.

TKV CEO Vu Anh Tuan highlighted the EU’s strengths in advanced technology, experience, and green development vision - key factors aligned with TKV’s strategy for energy transition and mining sector modernization.

On bauxite, TKV is currently operating the Tan Rai and Nhan Co alumina complexes with a combined output of over 1.4 million tonnes per year. The Group plans to expand capacity and develop the Dak Nong 2 bauxite–alumina complex, moving toward an integrated value chain from mining to aluminum production, with a projected capacity of 0.5–1 million tonnes of aluminum annually.

For rare earths, TKV is focusing on developing the Dong Pao mine in Lai Chau - Vietnam’s largest rare earth deposit - with a strategy to produce high-purity separated oxides (≥99% REO), in line with national mineral planning.

“We seek cooperation with EU partners in aluminum electrolysis technology, environmentally friendly red mud treatment, and high-quality rare earth processing to contribute responsibly and transparently to global supply chains,” said Mr. Vu Anh Tuan.

Ambassador Julien Guerrier welcomed TKV’s development orientation and emphasized that, following the upgrade of EU–Vietnam relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in early 2026, cooperation in critical raw materials has become a top priority.

EU member states and companies are keen to become reliable partners of TKV, offering expertise, technology transfer, and investment in high-value projects such as the Dong Pao rare earth mine and future aluminum production facilities.

Both sides agreed to maintain close dialogue to advance cooperation in investment, trade, and technical support. The EU’s engagement is expected to help TKV access advanced technologies and strengthen its position in the global minerals sector, contributing to Vietnam’s sustainable and green development goals./.
