The Prime Minister agreed with policy to increase the capacity of Son La HPP to 3,200 MW

On the afternoon of May 29, 2022 The Prime Minister (PM) Pham Minh Chinh and the mission of the Government had a meeting with the Standing Party Committee of Son La Province.
Reporting to the Prime Minister, Mr. Nguyen Huu Dong - Secretary of the Son La Provincial Party Committee said that at present, the Son La province is maintaining the efficient operation of 3 large hydropower plants as Son La, Huoi Quang, Nam Chien, and 65/76 small hydropower projects decided on investment policy.
On Son La hydropower plant, Son La province proposed to increase capacity from 2400 to 3200 MW.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien, the Minister of Industry and Trade completely agreed with the Son La Provincial People’s Committee proposal to increase capacity of the Son La hydropower plant.

Concluding this issue, PM Pham Minh Chinh requested the Son La Provincial People's Committee to coordinate with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), relevant ministries, agencies and the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) to urgently study and review extending Son La project with ensuring the safety of reservoir and dam, energy security and climate change.
"If the above requirements are met, please supplement this project to the Power Development Planning VIII and implement it as soon as possible.
On the other hand, it is necessary to study the floating (on lake surface) solar power projects and wind power projects in Son La province”- emphasized the Prime Minister.
